British brand Newgate started life a quarter of a century ago, when entrepreneurs Jim and Chloe Read first met, fell in love, and began looking for ways to combine their shared passions for retro and contemporary design.
A background in antiques inspired them to begin sourcing and framing vintage prints, with the twist in fate coming when they chanced across a batch of old clock movements and began incorporating these to create quirky, bespoke clocks. Their first trade show was a sell-out, and several decades, hundreds of iconic clock designs, and thousands of world-wide stockists later, the Reads are proud to be flying the flag for British designed timepieces across the globe.
Having been kicked out of art school in his youth for ‘not fitting the mould’, today Creative Director Jim heads up Newgate’s innovative design studios. Here each of Newgate’s products is developed from initial sketch through to finished design, allowing the team complete control over every aspect of how a product looks and works.
Chloe and Jim’s ambition to create a legacy of great products has meant momentum hasn’t slowed now that Newgate has earned its place as the leading British destination clock brand.
