Time flies when you're having fun

Over-the-top cocktails, painting the stairs, and how to deal with clutter. Chloe explains all to LivingEtc.
Newgate Clocks and Watches co-founder Chloe Read relaxes in her living room

Time flies when you’re having fun – nobody knows that better than the couple behind Newgate Clocks. Chloe and Jim’s clock company started small, but has grown into a thriving business with stockists all over the world. Their home in Wales, where they live with their two kids and Tick Tock the dog, is modern and relaxed, proving you can live in the country and still do contemporary.

It all started when…

…we were both still teenagers. Jim did up his Mini Moke and sold it for £2,500. We used the money to set up the company and never looked back.

Absolute heaven is…

…running a hot bath full of Molton Brown bubbles, until the water is spilling over the edge, and getting stuck into the latest John Grisham thriller.

I like living where I do because…

…it’s quiet and you really can’t beat the view. I look out of the kitchen window and see rhododendrons and the Welsh hills.

Lights I’ve fallen in love with include…

…the Sputnik and Tom Dixon’s Mirror balls – they have a great Seventies feel and I love all the reflections.

When it comes to paint…

…it’s mostly Farrow & Ball’s White Tie and James White. The only colourful elements are our painted stairs and a floral mural in the living room, which Jim painted one night after a couple of bottles of wine.

One of the best parties I’ve ever been to was…

…the wedding of Jasmin Guinness and Gawain Rainey. It was in Jasmine’s grandfather’s castle in County Kildare, Ireland, and such a beautiful day. Gawain’s from around here and was best man at our wedding.

I would rather die than…

…fill my house with ornaments. I can’t stand clutter that just sits there and collects dust.

The best barbecue food ever is…

…fresh white fish, such as sea bass, simply grilled and served with a salad, using rocket grown in my own back yard.

My favourite piece of furniture is…

… our sofa, from the Conran Shop. It’s as big as the QE2.

A great way to get tipsy is…

…on really over-the-top cocktails, served in pineapples with loads of unbrellas and extra bits that look amazing… Very Del Boy.

We spend our lives surrounded by clocks, but…

…I’m always rushing to get the kids bundled into the car and off to nursery, and likewaise at night, they are always the last two to be collected. It’s the same when we travel, Jim and I are always last to catch flight, ferries and trains.
